The Northern Thunder Classic Auto Club

traces its roots back to the late 1990s in Drayton Valley, where a small group of passionate car enthusiasts began gathering to share their love of classic machines.

What started as a handful of friends talking cars has grown into a thriving club of more than 25 dedicated members who continue to keep that original spirit alive.

Over the years, Northern Thunder became well known for its long-standing partnership with the Thunder in the Valley long‑weekend drag races.

For 11 consecutive years, our members worked behind the scenes to help ensure the event ran smoothly and safely. Even after the races came to an end, the legacy of that partnership remains a proud part of our story.
Community support has always been at the heart of who we are. The club has contributed to numerous local causes throughout Drayton Valley, including fundraising efforts for the CT scanner at the local hospital. We continue to support Santa Anonymous, our local animal rescue, school programs, and senior initiatives. Each year, we also sponsor a town flower bed as a small but meaningful way to give back to the community that supports us.

Our annual car show has been a staple in Drayton Valley for 27 years, with only a brief pause during the COVID‑19 pandemic. One of the most unique traditions of our show is that our members do not compete. Instead, we honour our own through the Memorial Trophy, awarded each year based on votes from the show’s participants. It’s a tribute to the members who built this club and a reminder of the friendships and memories that continue to drive us forward.

From our beginnings in the late ’90s to the strong, community‑minded club we are today, Northern Thunder remains committed to celebrating classic cars, supporting local causes, and keeping the spirit of automotive enthusiasm alive in Drayton Valley.
